Eli’s Week 3 Top 10 NFL Teams
Hard to believe it’s Week 3 already, here’s my top 10 heading into the week:
1. San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers certainly look like the team to beat in what is looking like a much better NFC than we all anticipated. The dynamic offense led by Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk, who seems to be finally breaking out, is one of the best in the league. Brock Purdy certainly looks the part after Week 2, and this defense remains one of the top units in the league. SF is outscoring their opponents by 30 points two games in, a number that should go up on Thursday night when the Giants come to town.
2. Dallas Cowboys
You could make a real argument for putting Dallas first here, but I think the 49ers are still more of a complete team from what I’ve seen so far. Dallas’ defense somehow looks better than last year, and Micah Parsons could be making a real case for MVP. Dallas has handled both New York teams, each of whom could be lowly this season, but it was a good sign to see Dak Prescott play as well as he did against one of the top defenses in the leagues in the Jets. Pass-catching depth behind CeeDee Lamb may be an issue, but Brandin Cooks should be back soon. Dallas travels to Arizona this week.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
On paper, this is the most talented team in the NFL, but they haven’t looked the part in the first two weeks. The Eagles are 2-0, but stress-filled 4th quarters have been their trend so far. The offense came along last week by getting back to their running ways, but the defense certainly has major flaws, particularly on the back end. James Bradberry should be back this week, but the loss of Avonte Maddox will hurt this team tremendously in the slot. It feels like the Eagles are still miles away from playing their best football, but they’ll need to this week in a Monday night showdown against the surprising 2-0 Bucs.
4. Kansas City Chiefs
Both teams from last year’s Super Bowl just don’t look right to start the season, but have a combined 3-1 record. The Chiefs looked more like the Chiefs with Travis Kelce back catching passes from Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones rushing the passer, but the Chiefs have yet to find their full form. I still think the lack of pass catchers behind Kelce could come back to haunt them later this season, but KC just terrorized what is supposed to be an elite Jacksonville offense on Sunday. Things will get better, but we’re still waiting on that classic Chiefs offensive outburst. Maybe it will come this week when the Bears come to Arrowhead.
5. Miami Dolphins
Miami is looking like a real threat this year, but as Javier always says, and he’s right, let’s see what they look like in December. Tua has been unbelievable to start the season, and aside from his interception against the Pats, has played mistake-free football through two games. The defense is still a cause for concern, but they looked better against New England on Sunday night. The run game has evolved into a real asset for Miami, a crucial part of keeping Tua upright. Miami faces Denver on Sunday at home.
6. Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore has looked much better than I anticipated so far. With wins over the lowly Texans and what was supposed to be a Super Bowl contender in the Bengals, Baltimore finds itself at the top of what could be the best division in football. Lamar Jackson looked great last week, and this pass-catching core led by Mark Andrews is coming along with the emergence of Zay Flowers. Baltimore has one of the fastest defenses in the league, but I still question how legit their pass rush is. Baltimore gets Indy at home this Sunday.
7. Buffalo Bills
The Bills looked much more like the Bills we anticipated this season with a resounding win over the Las Vegas Raiders at home this past Sunday. Buffalo kept the passing game short and sweet after Josh Allen’s three picks last week while throwing the ball downfield. We’ll see how conservative they play it moving forward, but it was a welcome change for what has become a turnover-prone offense. The defense looks good, allowing just 32 points through two games, and Von Miller hasn’t taken the field yet. Buffalo faces the upstart 2-0 Commanders on the road on Sunday.
8. New Orleans Saints
The new-look Saints have been very good so far, and it starts with their defense. Allowing just one touchdown through two weeks (a garbage time drive by the Panthers) New Orleans has allowed just 32 points so far this year. The run game is still a work in progress, but that will change when Alvin Kamara returns from suspension in Week 4. Derek Carr is leading a solid pass game, but needs to cut down on the turnovers. This team is loaded with weapons from Chris Olave and Michael Thomas to Juwuan Johnson and Rashid Shaheed. The Saints travel to Lambeau to take on Green Bay this week.
9. Detroit Lions
Despite the tough defeat at home on Sunday to Seattle, the Lions still crack my top 10 this week. Jared Goff is playing like he did last season, and this defense, despite getting drastically beat up on Sunday, looks like a much better unit than last year. It remains to be seen if the unit will look the same going forward with injuries to James Houston and CJ Gardner-Johnson, which is something to watch going forward. The offensive line remains the best in the business, and Jahmyr Gibbs is ready to breakout with the week-to-week injury David Montgomery sustained on Sunday. Detroit faces Atlanta at home this week.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville was very disappointing Sunday, failing to take advantage of a lackluster Chiefs offense and scoring just nine points with no touchdowns on the day. I still like this team a lot, and their defense is much better than anticipated. The secondary still needs to come together, but this front seven is legit. The offense should still be one of the best in the league, but we haven’t seen the full potential of it yet so far this season. The Jags get Houston at home this week, the perfect opponent for them to breakout against.
